Washington Hospital, The Stories

Washington Hospital, The: "My mother was recently at Washington Hospital, UPMC. This was her 8th admit this year. Every experience has been pretty bad but this most recent was DESPICABLE! Dr. Husan, head of the Hospitalist, refused to give care to my music m for 2 days! The nurses and family begged him. I finally had her transferred to Shadyside, Pittsburgh where she received WONDERFUL care. Dr. Husan refused to start an IV even though my mom was unable to swallow for 2 days due to severe mouth ulcer and her BUN and Creatinine were climbing to alarming rates. He stated because she had a small pleural effusion and EF of 20%. Obviously I'm a very educated and experienced RN so although he fooled my family, I knew my mom and my medicine. When I challenged him he just refused to go see her or give her any care. I have to give kudos to the head nurse Frank, her nurse Tammy, the head of case management, Lynn and the nurse supervisor. They all also tried to convince the arrogant (or stupid but I really believe arrogantly) dr. Husan. They all were very supportive of our request to transferring, assuring us it was the right thing to do. Lynn somehow convinced Dr. Husan to agree to a direct transfer so the family did not have to pay the $1100. Ambulance fee, for that I was grateful. At Shadyside, the immediately began gentle hydration. The nurses and doctors were so supportive to family and mom. My mom eventually passed peacefully at Shadyside. However, with their care, she became alert and was able to have valuable family time, was comfortable and laughing with us, and able to be involved in end of life decisions. My family will NEVER go back to Washington Hospital but can not say enough positives about Shadyside. A huge Thank You to Dr. Redner, Joan the CRNP, THE MANY NURSES AND TECHS ON 7C. God Bless you all for the joy and peace we got with our mom because of you all. " - Judy
