St Alexius Medical Center Stories

St Alexius Medical Center: "I went in at 10:30pm and left at 3:15am. Within that time my vitals were taken and a covid test. I waited then I was given a room. I was in the room about 1hr & 1/2. The dr really did nothing for me but tell me I may have a virus. No blood work. My symptoms were bad headache, nausea, fatigue, dizzying, extremely weak. He gave me something for the nausea and I had to ask for something for the pain. He apologized several times for not asking me some things. I left without knowing if maybe I was dehydrated or something. I am still not 100%, not sure if I'm contagious. I was not satisfied with the exam. " - Efrain

St Alexius Medical Center: "If you’d like for patients to return for routine or other things besides covid-19, you’re going to have to think like a patient who’s fearful and set things up differently. I can see you are trying, but I am doubtful it will pass the public’s muster. It did not pass mine.

Here’s my experience. My respiratory symptoms were a red flag to the staff so I was correctly asked to register for my xray by phone from the parking lot so they could take extra precautions. This is something everyone should appreciate and celebrate! When I completed the registration (5 people and an hour of my time, BTW, in addition to your clever website that allowed me to photograph my pertinent documents), I was instructed to proceed to the emergency room entrance where they had a cordoned off area for patients like me to wait. There was only one chair so I assume that only one patient at a time can wait there. I quickly realized however, that my waiting area served as both an employee entrance to the hospital and it was very close to the patient entrance to the emergency department. All the many, many people passing through wore a surgical mask. There were 5 employees wearing only a surgical mask standing around talking all within a few feet from me. Now, being a nurse, I know that copious PPE does not exist. I also know that covid-19 is a droplet and airborne disease (at least for a little while) and that only a N95 mask is truly considered protective against it (but a surgical mask is better than nothing I will concede). I also know that about 25% of covid-19 carriers are asymptomatic, but can potentially still spread the disease. When I asked to wait directly outside because I was uncomfortable in that environment with so many people around me, the nurse told me no. This seemingly would have caused her no inconvenience as I mentioned I would wait at the window for her visual signal to return, and a mere 10 steps would have taken her to the door where she could have called me. Anyway, you must do better. I’m guessing that any patient being asked to wait in a makeshift waiting area which is technically the employee entrance would be nervous.

I would have shared this privately with the hospital for your internal use, but I could not find a way to do that. Best of luck to you. I am rooting for you."
