Princeton Community Hospital Stories

Princeton Community Hospital: "I took my grandmother here about 2 months ago. She hadn't been eating or drinking for 2 days. She had severe NVD for a week prior and was dehydrated, had AMS (altered mental state/status) and her blood pressure was astronomical. The way she was acting I thought she may have experienced a TIA...or mini stroke. She had fallen and couldn't lift or move her arm from the pain. Her arm physically would not move or rotate. After waiting nearly 2 hours to be taken back she was placed in a room where the nurse and doctor were very quick. They gave her an IV & took blood for testing. Nearly 2 hours later they said she wasn't dehydrated and labs showed nothing. I insisted on a bag of fluids. They took her to x-ray. I begged the doctor to just CT her shoulder when they did the CT of her head(brain) because the pain it would cause her to have to attempt the positions necessary for plain films wouldnbe excruciating. He insisted on an x-ray which killed her arm. When she came back from Radiology she had finished the bag of fluid and started feeling much better. I asked for Ensure shake while she was willing to try to get some nutrients. That never came. The preliminary report on the plain films and CT were both negative. We sat there another 2 hours without hearing from anyone. After much ado, I got her a blanket and pillow and she actually fell asleep. The alarm on her BP monitor kept going off bc her BP was so crazy. Nobody ever came to check on it, despite my insistence...they said it's probably because she's in pain. She's 83 and has leukemia and a plethora of other health problems. When she asked for something for pain finally they treated her like a dope seeker and finally after HOURS of being there brought her a toradol dose in her IV. That eased up her pain slightly but she still rated her pain 7 or 8...but they refused her any additional pain meds. Eventually we both went to sleep. Her attending came in finally and said he was just waiting on her urine screen before any pain meds and to check for cause of her AMS then they could discharge her. We told him there was no urine screen done. He said he ordered it almost 3 hours ago! Finally 20 mins later a nurse comes to take her urine. Nearly an hour later she said "Baby just take me home. I want to go home." It had been almost 9 hours altogether since we got her in there so I said just 15 more minutes and we'll go. Right then the doctor came in and said he was giving her a sling and had no clue what was wrong with her arm and the pain was causing her blood pressure to rise and she had to start eating and drinking even if she throws it up...no Ensure ever came for her btw...and said that he had no explanation for her sudden onset of severe confusion, emotional demonstration and slight difficulty with simple comprehension.
He advised a follow up with an orthopedic doctor and sent her home. I think he gave her a muscle relaxer...
It was so sad and I left there terrified, upset and broken hearted at her suffering with my precious grandmother who was so upset and frightened because she was in the same predicament with her health as she was when she reluctantly let me take her to the hospital on my birthday...with zero answers from a Healthcare professional...a doctor who had clearly been around for some time as he was closer to retirement than he was graduating from university to practice medicine. His bedside manner was abrupt, impersonal & hurried...they all were, the whole staff...to the point of carelessness.
I hate that I had to put my precious angel...my grandmother...through all of that, Nearly 10 hours of further discomfort, pain & fear of the now definitive unknown.

Terrible ER. Terrible staff (Radiology was great, as was registration/admissions, and the nurse who came on shift last...thank you to these people for a job well done with empathy and care...)
As for the rest...well I can't say anything nice so I won't say anything at all..."

Princeton Community Hospital: "A family member was seen in the ER last night for obvious symptoms of a TIA or mini-stroke...for whatever reasons, he spent the night on a stretcher in the ER department instead of being transferred to a room.
I understand with Covid-19, maybe a bed wasn’t available. However, he was on this stretcher the entire time without the common courtesy of a pillow. I was speaking with him at times during the night on his cell phone, and instructed him to use his call button to ask for help. He did get a blanket, but he had weakness in his hand from the mini stroke he had suffered-and as he tried to get a drink of water, he spilled it on his blanket. He asked for another blanket, but never received it, and was told they were out of pillows. I’m a retired nurse, and I understand how busy it can get at times. I also know that there are times when patients have no voice, and are left alone to fend for themselves.
During this time of uncertainty over this virus, the switch from Bluefield to Princeton, the shortage of staff, etc. it isn’t fair for the patients to suffer. I would hope that none of the employee’s families, or none of the higher ups families would have to be left alone with no voice in the ER, on a stretcher, with a wet blanket and no pillow...
Compassion is why I became a nurse... I understand why there’s so much frustration on both sides.
Money is not what matters in the community. The people are what matter. "

Princeton Community Hospital: "My husband had back surgery 2 weeks ago and now we think he has a blood clot in his leg. We have sat in the waiting room for over an hour. I pray that if it is a blood clot that it doesn't brake off and go to his heart.
This place is a joke"

Princeton Community Hospital: "Was here in the last wk for an automobile accident and the didn't even clean up the injuries. PCH used to be a well maintained hospital for this area now it's at best another poorly operated bandaid clinic like Welch Emergency Hospital. Well actually that's too much credit.. Again didn't even get a bandaid. This area has such a bad reputation for health care due to in part of choice and the other part just might be the people giving it. This is a state of the art Hospital with typical Government State unprofessional unqualified unethical disappointing and discouraging Staff." - Rodney
