    Monadnock Community Hospital Stories

    Apr 13, 2017, 4:28 PM
Monadnock Community Hospital: "I was admitted there twice within a matter of days the same symptoms: severe head and neck pain on only 1 side. I had already been seen at an Urgent Care facility days prior for the same condition, so I walked in with my test results in hand. Given 2 opportunities they completely failed to diagnose a growing severe infection and failed to detect a life-threatening blood clot on a cat-scan. They recommended I get an MRI but did not have the ability to do that themselves.
Eventually, when my symptoms worsened, I was seen at another ER and was able to do an MRI. That test revealed what appeared to be a very large tumor in my head. In that case I was at least referred to a specialist who was called in, but not in sufficient time. As symptoms completely debilitated me, I needed to be admitted to another hospital for life-saving care, as the infection had gotten so bad it was closing my throat, and I was in so much pain I could barely walk. In the meantime I had already missed a couple of weeks of work, being unable to sleep or think clearly.
I did provide less than positive feedback about the treatment I received there, and the feedback I received back indicated that the staff there believed that the treatment I received was appropriate for my symptoms, and that I could have returned for another visit (and another expensive co-payment). This was interesting feedback to receive, given 1) Their complete failure to even come remotely close to the correct diagnoses, and 2) Their own admission that they didn't have an MRI, which was THEIR OWN recommendation for a next step. I'm sure they felt the same way about my friend's husband, who was taken there for treatment of a stroke and soon after died (I'm told from their malpractice). Had I followed their advice, I would not be alive to tell this story, and I'm sure they would have been happy to bill my insurance for the third time and attempt to collect a third co-payment.
In retrospect, I perhaps should have known better. I read the local police reports, and it's often that I read that police are called because a patient is trying to leave. No wonder, I was left there for hours myself each time I visited without even a TV for distraction, and the care I received was sub-par. I know now (as I have also heard many stories from my local community) not to go there for care. Even in a life-threatening urgent situation I would rather chance driving 1 hour away for competent care vs. getting there quicker but waiting longer for sub-par care and an incorrect diagnoses.
There is an old adage which goes something like "if your only tool is a hammer, all of your problems start to look like nails." This - from my perspective, epitomizes the mindset of Monadnock Community Hospital. Furthermore, this approach of repetitive insurance billing and collection of co-payments while stringing along a patient with sub-par care is one of the major reasons our health care system is so broken."
