Manchester Memorial Hospital Stories

Manchester Memorial Hospital: "I will do all in my power to avoid MMH for myself and my loved ones.

Two years ago my father was admitted with pulmonary emboli. We were not informed of any other diagnoses, although reports we viewed much later revealed numerous other concerns, including a tumor.

When we were faced with the decision on a procedure that might alleviate the emboli, we were warned that it was “invasive,” but a Google search showed that it was minimally so.

With that inadequate information, we were then faced with the decision on whether or not he would enter hospice care. We asked to speak with the doctor, and waited several hours in my father’s room before we had to take my mother home. We were promised a call from the doctor, which we never received. My sister and I then pored over the diagnostic information, intended for medical professionals, and consulted with the only “doctor” available to us, Google. Yes, we relied on the internet to interpret medical data and make a life-or-death decision about our father.

More recently, a family member went to the MMH ED, and waited a full 24 hours to be admitted, and then, because the work day had ended an hour or so before, waited another day to be seen by a professional in the department. Calls to the physician regarding care were not returned.

I’d award this hospital a C-/D on care, and an F on communication. "
