Kaleida Health: "I hit my head a month ago and have been experiencing some head pain and pressure. Start getting concerned so I decided to go to the Emergency Room. I wanted to check in online to minimize the wait time in the ER. I proceeded to input my symptoms. I received a message stating because of the symptoms I need to go to the ER immediately. That meant I could not check in online and needed to be seen right away. I decided to go to the nearest hospital. I arrived at Millard Fillmore Suburban emergency room at around 8:23 pm. I have never been to his emergency room before, so I proceeded to ask the security officer where to sign up, he was a little rude. The reception staff was very nice. I was finally called to be triaged and started describing my symptoms to the nurse, “I came in to be seen for a prior head injury and still have head pressure and pain”. I told the triage Nurse I was experiencing lightheaded, and feeling like passing out. I thought maybe a head injury was a priority!

The website clearly states:

Patients are triaged at arrival and are then seen by a qualified medical professional in priority order based on their presenting complaint and reason for the visit.

I came in with a head injury, so why am I still in the waiting room at 9:29 pm? It has been in an hour and no one has called me in the ER treatment room! Right now I can have a serious problem. I have a history of DVT! My family history is an aneurysm. They never asked, do you have a history of blood clotting or aneurysm?! So I will be documenting my stay here, just in case.

It is 9:40 pm and I am still in the ER waiting room. So it’s been an hour and twenty minutes.
The time is 9:50 pm still in the ER waiting room. Well, I hope my life means something to someone in this ER!

I proceeded to ask the triage nurse why am I still in the waiting area and I see people who checked in after me was called in the back. They literally cleared the ER before calling me. What was that about? Don’t want to play that card, but what do you want me to think? She said sarcastically, they're getting a room ready for you right now! Wow it is 10:00 p.m.
It is 10:21 pm and I am finally in a room! Progress! The ER in ALL hospitals wait time needs improvement!

Seen the Doctor, ordered a CT scan of my head, did an exam and a neurological exam. However, did not check my head for visible injury. I can have a lump or some kind of injury to the scalp or head. You never take a patient word. Always, always check the injury site. Overall I do like the Doctor super nice and seem concern.
So I over heard a medical profession, I believe a nurse talking to a patient about other prior patients. I’m sorry but what happened to HIPAA! They were comparing emergency conditions and what was important as an emergency. I feel it doesn’t matter why a patient come to the ER. All medical situation should be as important as any! That was not professional at all. Well, it is 10:38 pm. still waiting on that CT scan.

So, I needed to go to the bathroom. I was never told where the bathroom locations were, so I'm wandering around trying to find a bathroom and no one asked me, do I need help or can I help you? Finally, a nurse came and asked me can I help you? As I was walking to the bathroom I overheard a paramedic say to a patient, “there's nothing wrong with you!” Wow, I thought I heard it all! Where is the compassion for patients and people?! I guess it left once COVID-19 took over! Or maybe health professionals are overworked and underpaid.

Finally, getting a CT scan of my head at 10:55 pm. The CT technician was amazing! She naturally was kind. She explained the procedure and how it works. She was honest about the wait time! I appreciate that! So now, it is a waiting game. The Doctor asked me did I need something for pain maybe an hour ago. Still waiting on that Tylenol at 11:40 pm.

Thank GOD my CT was clear! I don't want to think if things were different what the outcome would have been.

I am getting discharged of course with instructions. The nurse asked me, did I still need the Tylenol. The nurse proceeded to say,” if you still need Tylenol it’s going to be a while because I have to call the pharmacy department and they take forever to bring medication to the ER.” What! I’m getting discharged! I will take some when I get home.

I am so happy that I am a health professional and a Patient Advocate!
