Duke University Hospital Stories

Duke University Hospital: "This is utterly ridiculous. If my situation didn’t seem emergent to them, they could have just said that, instead of having me sit in the cold waiting room for over 3 hours so far … And still waiting." - TORI

Duke University Hospital: "I have spent 2 full days here in the emergency room with a total wait time of about 7 hours in excruciating pain. Absurd and unacceptable. Do not come here." - Charles

Duke University Hospital: "The ER @ Duke Regional Hospital is broken. I waited six hours to be seen. I was in excruciating pain and vomittted at least 4 times while waiting. Finally after many hours I was sent to a surgical floor and prepped for surgery that morning. My surgery was successful but I think I have PTSD from this very painful and traumatic experience. I ask... If we can send satellite to the moon why can’t we solve the BROKEN ER system which is a problem across the USA?
I think a nationwide task force needs to be commissioned to address this issue. "

Duke University Hospital: "Absolutely disgusting the wait time. Patient comes in because their cardiac surgeon advised them to be seen after having on set of cardiac symptoms of a heart attack. She also has a hole in her heart which has a device which makes her cardiac events. We have been in the waiting room for 13 hours now. Some staff are great to work with but majority really don't care about your situation and you can tell that you are another number. One male nurse named Kevin is rude, I said we have been here close to 7 hours and i made reference to him that they seem to want to make a record of 8-9 hours for total wait time and his response was "maybe it is"

They go and get test done to show that they are doing patient care but that's the early stages of being there. They honestly don't care about you, you are just a number and it's absolutely sad, it's sad that they can't do anything about times. They have some of the worse wait times in the state as well as in the country. Stop the nonsense and fix it before someone dies waiting in your wait room if it already hasn't happened."

Duke University Hospital: "Arrived at the ER at 5pm on a Monday with severe abdominal pain. It is now 2am and I am still sitting in the lobby waiting room. I have been give no pain medication and no IV, despite advising of pain levels every time vitals are checked and thee staff knowing I suffer from Crohns. My husband went to the desk nurse an hour and a half ago and directly asked for help. No attention provided yet. He called for the on duty hospital administrator - no return call yet. " - Kris

Duke University Hospital: "Arrived ED 1500 hours (3:00 pm) it's now 1:05 AM and I'm still not in a room or a bed, I'm in the lobby area, however, I was triaged in about 1 hour, then immediately for CT scan. Then back in the lobby, 3 hours later they drew blood and gave me some medication. Then back to lobby. All the staff are helpful, delightful, knowledgeable and very hard workers. The wait time is only due to the large qualities of people waking through the front door. People have come before me and left after me, I guess they have superficial complaints. I believe more critical patients have longer wait times so they do get a bed. Minor issues have no need for a bed, just send them back out the door. I am this far very pleased with Duke. I have a complex complaint that could be from a past diagnosis . " - Darrin

Duke University Hospital: "I had whipple surgery at Duke Hospital and spent 8 days in the hospital. i found the doctors, nurses and staff to be caring and competent, all together first rate. However, the patiemt rooms were substandrd and not in any way conducive to a positive attitude. The hospital is old and terribly designed for patient comfort. The rooms are dark and cramped with poor usage of the space available. It is where I might send a serial killer to spend the rest of his life. It would be hell on earth. It was that bad. the doctors and staff deserve better as well as any patient forced spend more than a night ot two there." - Larry

Duke University Hospital: "Currently been at Duke hospital for 4 hours in the ER. People are sick throwing up in bags while waiting. No social distancing what so ever taking place or being enforced the hand sanitizers are empty and they are out of paper towels in the bathroom. I would feel more comfortable eating a meal off a gas station bathroom floor than I do sitting in this waiting room. " -
