Cumberland Medical Center Stories

Cumberland Medical Center: "In 2019, I fell and my teeth punctured a hole through my lower lip. There was a lot of blood, but I got a gel ice pack from the freezer and applied it to the wound and took a pain pill. The constant pressure and the cold from the ice pack stopped the bleeding enough that I was able to clean the blood off myself, change into clean clothes, and drive myself to the CCMC ER which is barely 3.3 miles (7 minuites) from my home. I waited over 2 hours to even be seen by the triage (evaluation) nurse. She sent me back to the ER waiting area where I waited for another 1-1/2 hours with my gel ice pack just about completely melted. I was then put into one of the ER exam rooms and asked the nurse if I could get a fresh ice pack; he said they didn't have any, but he did manage to find me a plastic bag filled with ice from the employee lunch room. This stopped the bleeding again and eased the pain which had come roaring back because my pain pill wore off. I waited another 1 hour or more for the poor, exhausted medical resident (who was the only doctor on staff for 24 ER exam rooms) to see me, clean the wound, stitch my lip up, and give me antibiotic and tetanus shots. The lessons I learned that night were very helpful. 1) I should not have cleaned the blood up and changed clothes. 2) I should not have stopped the bleeding and drove myself to the ER. 3) Numbers 1 and 2 above were the causes of my having to wait for nearly 5 hours at CCMC ER. 4) If I was able to do numbers 1 and 2 above, I should have driven to Cookeville Regional Medical Center ER even though it is over 30 miles away from Crossville. 5) Avoid the Crossville ER if it is at all possible, short of risking your life. The CCMC hospital is great for planned admissions or admissions after an emergency surgery. I have had excellent treatment in the hospital after all my joint replacement surgeries, but if you have any other options to using the CCMC ER, take advantage of one of those options. If I had waited until the next morning and walked into my primary care doctor's office, I would have been seen at 7am instead of 8am. That's a 4 hour wait instead of a 5+ hours wait. Stay away from the CCMC ER!!!" - Deborah

Cumberland Medical Center: "Called 9-1-1 about 9:30-9:45 . Jennifer and Nick Prall did an excellent job . Things were busy they took my dads vitals and put him in the lobby . Sat in the lobby for about two hours or so then they began to intermittently run tests .He finally got back into an exam room and was admitted to a room sometime around 6:30. Pm A crazy long day . Even longer for my dad who’s 83 years old with congestive heart and kidney failure . All the personnel were professional and kind but it took a long time to get anything done . I wish there was a way to expedite things a bit . The lobby was really cold by the way and the elderly people that had to wait were really cold ." - Becky

Cumberland Medical Center: "My friend who is 56 year old, with several serious medical
Problems waited for 13 hours in the er and still hasn’t went back. She isn’t able to do this. She is very sick. And the staff was very rude when I called about her. 13 hours. Now that’s not even right or should ever be done to anyone. I can see a wait if an hour maybe two. But 13. Come on now. Could be you family member or child. Or parent. That’s ridiculous. "

Cumberland Medical Center: "I arrived around 2:30 am with severe ear pain . Something had went in my ear. I was in waiting room till around 5:30am never saw a Dr. There were others in there also. Not one person was called back the whole time I was there. I asked how much longer. I was informed they didn't know that they had people waiting in the halls back there because there wasn't enough room. I understand there are far more worse emergencys. This is ridiculous. I ended up at cookeville with a ruptured ear drum. " - Paula

Cumberland Medical Center: "I fell night before last, hit the back of my head neck and,my whole back of my back, I waited in the waiting room, with a neck brace on, they didn't send me home with the neck brace even though they charged my insurance because I signed a paper just for that, they took me back but they put me in a chair, I saw I guess she was a PA did x rays, said I had a mild concussion and I was battered and bruised, I don't drink or do drugs, even when bed became available I still sat in that chair, I didn't see a nurse until I was being released, so I should have been treated with respect, I told them I wasn't there to get any pain medication I just wanted to make sure I was ok." - Connie
