Community Hospital Of Long Beach Stories

Community Hospital Of Long Beach: "My 79 year old Mother was admitted the week before Christmas with fluid in her lung. The nursing staff was fine and the physical care she received from the doctor who got her case was ok but I think the way the doctor talked to my Mother was inappropriate and cruel.

After the fluid was drained from my Mom's lung a CT scan showed a small mass in her lung. Before ANY test results had come back to indicate what the mass might be this doctor was scaring my Mom with talk of cancer. The doctor told my Mom it was "most likely malignant and if that was the case there was nothing they could do for her, they would send her home for as much time as she has left". The doctor told my Mom to "go home and enjoy her last Christmas with her family". WTF Doctor?!?!

First of all we don't know if it's cancer or not yet, that doctor is not an oncologist so if it turns out to be cancer how does that doctor know what her treatment options might be, and for Christ's sake why would you say "last Christmas" to a patient who is already scared of what her diagnosis might be? That is cruel, plain & simple.

I'm sure the doctor was giving her honest opinion about what might happen but really, she could have kept all of that to herself and still have been honest. Honest would have been "We have no test results yet so go home and rest and enjoy Christmas with your family". That's all.

I work in healthcare, I know not every doctor is sensitive to patient's feelings. But I also know you don't diagnose a patient without test results and you sure as hell don't tell a patient they are going home to have a "last holiday" when you are just their ER doctor!! Doctors aren't gods (although some of them think they are) and the best they can do is give you their best educated guess based on their education & experience. But do us all a favor Doctors and treat and talk to your patient the way you would want your own family member to be treated and talked to. "
