Desert Springs Hospital Stories

Desert Springs Hospital: "When my brother was admitted to a normal room (not ICU) at Dessert Springs Hospital he was walking & talking just like any other normal person. 25 days later he left in a body bag.

While being treated for dehydration, his doctor suspected he had an infection and was septic, so he began right away with starting my brother on antibiotic Vanco, while waiting for confirmatory test results .
These test results all negative, never did identify an infection.

Vanco was discontinued but not soon enough. My brother developed Vancomycin induced acute kidney injury, causing his kidneys to no longer work. (this is confirmed by autopsy results)

They waited till he was near dead before dialysis was started. I watched as he slipped slowly away... And watched. I often wish I too was dead because I hate myself for watching and not doing more.
You see this was around Friday- Saturday July 1 2016. (Admitted June 24) and people were not thinking about my dying brother, as this was 4th of July weekend, doctors were not in and they were short staffed.
I asked and asked them what is going on, are we to sit here and just watch him slip away. It was so sad, he was a good man. But my questions didnt get anywhere. And I just watched.

I didn't make a big fuss, I'm a nurse and I know how it is to be short handed. So I watched. I hate myself now. But at the time I thought my 47 year old brother who never had any health issues would pull out of this.

It wasn't until Tuesday July 5 2016 that a whole entourage of people came to his now ICU bed, like there was an emergency going on, when folks this had been going on Saturday, Sunday, and 4th of July Monday... No dialysis, he had been retaining all his fluids, became weak, could no longer walk, his metabolism became entirely imbalanced, which also effects your breathing, so he could no longer breath.
From July 1-2 2016 until Tuesday July 6 2016 I watched my brother slowly suffocate to death in his own body fluids that his kidneys could no longer process.
So along with this entourage of people my parents and I were told we needed to make a decision in regards to allowing them to put him on ventilator/life support We were told a decision had to be made at that moment because they said he had maybe a couple hours left to live, as his body had filled with Co2 and was not being oxygenated.
He was such a good person, he gave what little he had to other people. He was thoughtful person, the person that thought about the things no one else did.
I am scared of DSH, from my experience creepy, I would not send my dog there, its like torture camber or worse. I was trying to get mortality rate at DSH during the time my brother was there because it was my mom that noticed first, then I, body bag after another being wheeled out.
