Akron General Medical Center: "We have now been in the ER waiting room for almost 13 hours! Despite the fact my husband is in inexcusable pain from MRSA that is in his spine & other organs, they keep telling us "they have no beds available." Sorry, but after almost 13 hours, all I can say is WTF??!??" - PAMCCANN76

Akron General Medical Center: "Took wife to CC/AG ER on Saturday, August 7, 2021, 2 days after her outpatient surgery, on advice of her AG surgeon. Arrived at 3:30 pm with acute side/ back pain, and initial triage assessment was quickly completed in 30 minutes.

Then the waiting started -- for over 15 hours before we saw a doctor at 7:00 am the next morning! During those 15 hour in the waiting room, my wife was called to have her vitals rechecked every 2 or 3 hours, but were able to survive on vending machine food. Finally, at her 3rd vitals recheck, we asked her triage assessment & was told only the doctor could inform us of it &, of course, no doctor was available. If they had told us she was a low priority, we might have left & gone to an urgent care facility. In fact, during those 15 hours of waiting, nearly half of the ER patients got fed up with waiting & left without seeing a doctor, & we saw only a few patients admitted to see a doctor -- an epic fail of the system. We were told staff was down, but would be increased at 7 am, & she was the 1st patient called probably because we vocal but respectful about her worsening condition.

Once in the treatment room, we immediately saw several doctors, tests were quickly done, & a diagnosis was given within 2 and half hours. However, after the doctor told us he was satisfied to discharge her, we waited another 2 hours before we asked the nurse about the discharge papers, only to be told the doctor had not yet requested them. A few minutes later, the nurse told us we could leave without our discharge papers (yes, she actually said that), but we said we needed to leave with her pain med prescription. We assume the doctor just forgot (we understand doctors are busy) because we promptly received the discharge papers within 30 minutes. (According to the hospital's own website, discharge could take up to 20 minutes to prepare).

Lesson learned -- won't be going back to CC/AG Emergency Room unless it's the closest facility & the situation is life-threatening. Other ER's could be the same, but it's hard after experiencing over 17 hours of waiting for 2+ hours of doctor care. Also, next time we'd consider seeking treatment at an urgent care facility over the ER. Hope this never happens to you."

Akron General Medical Center: "
Be warned they don’t tell you about their one visitor policy.
So my friend had to drop my mom off at the hospital in order to get her there faster because I couldn’t. Naturally he went in with her as she was going in because he didn’t wanna leave her alone. Nobody at the hospital decided to explain that. Since he went in nobody else is allowed to go in now. Which means that I her son am not allowed to see my mother unless she’s dying. There is no policy that will allow me to switch places with him. They did not inform him or my mother about this policy. And they have no intent to try and remedy the situation. The staff at the counter arrogantly told me that I should have known about this. There were no signs I checked nobody mentioned it to her including the nurse the check-in counter or the doctors. Nobody seem to care about trying to find a way to fix the problem. As far as they were concerned my mom now has to spend who knows how long in a hospital without anybody related to her. So why am I putting all this up here I want everybody to be aware of the shady stuff that has been pulled at Akron General and hope that nobody else gets stuck in a situation in which somebody who is sick with an unknown disease that they have been working on fixing for over a year is now stuck inside of a hospital without anybody related to her and no way to fix that situation. I highly recommend finding a hospital that cares for the patients and visitors or the very least informed them of policies that will prevent family from meeting them."

Akron General Medical Center: "Got here around 3. It’s 830 and I’m still waiting to be seen. Blood and urine were taken within the first hour I was here and then rechecked blood pressure around 6. I am hemmorging from my intestines from bleeding ulcers so this experience has been terrible so far. :( So sad, it never used to be this way. " - Aimee

Akron General Medical Center: "I was treated with total disrespect by the nursing staff in the emergency room! The first time this happened, I took by pain management doctor's advice and reported this incident to Oms-bud. The second time this happened, I made the mistake of telling the er staff about contacting Oms-bud and they were absolutely horrible to me! Because I had had a stroke, my speech is impaired at times. This occurs when I'm extremely stressed. I'm guessing that several from the er staff regarded this as a sign that I was delayed. I hold two degrees (Masters) so my mental capacity is not the issue. As I stated earlier, I made the mistake of mentioning my reporting to Oms-bud. THAT caused the issue of being mistreated. The head nurse brushed off my conditions of swelling and discoloration of the leg/foot/knee as nothing that they could treat. During my last visit to the er, they ordered testing for blood clots and x-rays. Results were negative. During the second er visit, despite my saying that testing for blood clots and x-rays weren't necessary, they disagreed with me and conducted the same tests. Of course the results were again negative. Instead of trying to relieve my pain until I was able to see the orthopedic who I'm seeing, the head nurse 'lectured' on the costly testing instead of testing. Again, I went to the er under the advice of my p.m. doctor. Because I have a history of blood infections, she wanted my blood tested, ear checked, and said the er could make up some cocktail for pain relief that was more effective than the Norco I take at home. My ear was raw and I had lost my balance twice from being dizzy. The nurse took less than one second to check my ear and said, "Yes, it's a little red but I see no infection." They did check for blood infection (legs) and thankfully that was clear. They kept trying to put the words in my mouth that I had fallen from being dizzy. I had not and would not state that I had. (Proving that there was no need for another x-ray). The coloring? The left leg had been completely covered up when she claimed that my right leg was not discolored in the least. When I removed the blanket from the left leg for comparison, which she obviously should have done, it was white (my normal coloring). The right leg was pink! As for the swelling of the leg/knee, she merely glanced at my knee and said it had the same shape of the left knee. Funny how other specialists I see outside the er clearly disagreed! It wasn't difficult to spot the swelling because it was so apparent! When I asked if she would give me some pain relief she gave me one Norco. My p.m. doc had already told me to try two Norcos and if that didn't work let her know. One of the reasons she decided I needed to be seen (to get the cocktail for some relief). When I told the head nurse what my p.m. doctor stated, she was abrupt and spit out several reasons I shouldn't. I'm a 61-year old woman in much pain, not a child who needed lecturing. When she did agree upon a pain shot she sent a nurse in who quickly said that the shot would go into my arm opposed to the iv already in place. That isn't a chief complaint but it does make one wonder especially when it was the only time that I had actually cried when they inserted an iv. Almost one month later and the bruise on my hand and bruise and lump on my arm are still trying to heal! Yes, these two er experiences have soured me on Akron General Hospital, at least regarding the emergency room! Excuse me for the scattered explanation; I was just trying to touch base on all the occurrences. This was not written in advance and my wordage is spontaneous. When upset I have a tendency to stammer and my typing reflects my thoughts. To date, I still haven't heard back from Oms-bud and am waiting on their results. Sadly, I never reported the treatment received from the second visit despite being told by three specialist I should. I'm simply exhausted." - LLB

Akron General Medical Center: "When I was discharged the doctor came in the room, spent about three minutes with me. He refused to answer my questions, refused to go over discharge orders. Told me that if I had any questions to talk to my family doctor. After going to my pharmacy for my medications I found out he order me some meds, but on the labels it said take as directed, but he didn't tell me how to take them. This doctor was rude, made me felt like I was wasting his time, that I was worthless, just a stupid number. He is employed by the hospital. " - Mary
